The Canadian Firearms Safety Courses are introductory courses intended for all new firearms users, as well as for those who wish to better familiarize themselves with the safe handling of firearms.
Courses are not required to be taken by persons 18 years of age and older who have not been previously prohibited from the possession of firearms. They will, however, provide you with current information and safe handling practices for firearms which will better prepare you for the mandatory tests, both written and handling portions, should you choose to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL). These courses are designed to familiarize you with the safe, effective, and responsible handling of firearms and ammunition.
Courses can be taken at your convenience by contacting an FSESO Instructor, who will provide a list of available course dates and costs. Please note that the FSESO does not have a master list of these course dates...contact your local instructor for those details.
The courses help familiarize you with the basic parts of a firearm, proper loading and unloading of the firearm, proper stances for discharging the firearm, safe storage and transportation of firearms, in addition to carrying a firearm safely.
You will receive the opportunity at several points during the course to handle, load, and unload various firearm actions, and will be instructed on how to safely handle these firearms with hands on supervision from a qualified instructor.
Both the CFSC and CRFSC Course Study manuals can be ordered from the FSESO, in advance, to allow for the opportunity to get familiar with various points of proper firearm handling and safety. The cost is $12.00 per manual which includes shipping and taxes. The manuals may also be available in person from your Instructor, and cost $12.00 each.
If you have any further questions about taking the course, please contact your local instructor, or, the FSESO, under “Contact Us”.
